Commentary
Hariharānanda Bhāratī’s Sanskrit commentary, translated
For the Kula women, their ali-pāna, their drinking of wine, is declared to be only the act of accepting the scent, taking the smell of the wine. For practitioners who are householders five vessels (pañca-pātra) of ali-pāna are declared: householder practitioners should drink wine only in the measure of five vessels. By the word "householders" it is suggested that for others than them there is no fault in drinking more than five vessels. To the question "what is the fault of householder practitioners who drink more than five vessels?" he says "atipānāt…". (Covers verses 194 and 195.)
