Meaning
A coded verse, decoded by the commentary. Each of the three classes prefixes a different seed syllable to the Gāyatrī: "Tāra" is the praṇava, oṁ, for the brāhmaṇa; "Kamalā", the seed of Lakṣmī, śrīṁ, for the kṣatriya; "Vāgbhava", the seed of speech, aiṁ, for the vaiśya. So the brāhmaṇa says "oṁ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ tat savitur vareṇyaṁ…", the kṣatriya "śrīṁ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ…", the vaiśya "aiṁ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ…". Here the "marks of the rites" (verse 13) that differ by class become visible: the same prayer, with a different seed.

Commentary
Hariharānanda Bhāratī’s Sanskrit commentary, translated
"Tārādyā…". In the Kali age, in order, for brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas and vaiśyas, the Sāvitrī, the Gāyatrī, is told as beginning with Tāra, the praṇava (oṁ); beginning with Kamalā, the seed śrīṁ; and beginning with Vāgbhava, the seed aiṁ.
