शूद्रकर्त्तव्यानिThe duties of the śūdra

Verse 147

न पापमनसा पश्येदपि तद्गृहकिङ्करीः । विविक्तशय्यां हास्यञ्च ताभिः सह विवर्जयेत् ॥ १४७ ॥

na pāpamanasā paśyēdapi tadgṛhakiṅkarīḥ | viviktaśayyāṁ hāsyañca tābhiḥ saha vivarjayēt || 147 ||

Translation

He should not look with a sinful mind even at the maidservants of his master's house; and he should avoid secluded lying and laughter with them.

Meaning

The commentary draws the inference: if not even at the maidservants, then still less at the master's wife, daughter and the rest. "Vivikta-śayyā" is lying down in a secluded place; "tābhiḥ", with them, the maidservants. It reads verses 147 and 148 together.

Commentary

Hariharānanda Bhāratī’s Sanskrit commentary, translated

"Na pāpa…" and the rest. With a sinful mind he should not look even at the maidservants of his master's house; what need is there to speak of the master's wife, daughter and the rest? Viviktaśayyām: lying down in a secluded place. Tābhiḥ: with the maidservants of the master's house. (This explanation covers verses 147 and 148.)
