गुरुप्रार्थनाThe request to the guru

Verse 230

निवृत्तगृहकर्माणं विचार्य विधिवद्गुरुः । शान्तं विवेकिनं वीक्ष्य द्वितीयाश्रममादिशेत् ॥ २३० ॥

nivṛttagṛhakarmāṇaṁ vicārya vidhivadguruḥ | śāntaṁ vivēkinaṁ vīkṣya dvitīyāśramamādiśēt || 230 ||

Translation

Having duly examined him, the guru, seeing him to have completed the work of the house, calm and discerning, should grant him the second stage.

Meaning

The guru tests the candidate before accepting him: has he finished his household duties, is he "śānta", which the commentary glosses as one whose mind has become still, and "vivekin", discerning? Only then is renunciation ("the second stage") given.
