गृहस्थकर्त्तव्यानिThe duties of the householder

Verse 45

चतुर्वर्षावधि सुतान् लालयेत् पालयेत् पिता । ततः षोडशपर्यन्तं गुणान् विद्याञ्च शिक्षयेत् ॥ ४५ ॥

caturvarṣāvadhi sutān lālayēt pālayēt pitā | tataḥ ṣōḍaśaparyantaṁ guṇān vidyāñca śikṣayēt || 45 ||

Translation

Up to four years the father should cherish and protect his sons; then, till sixteen, he should teach them virtues and learning.

Meaning

A schedule of upbringing. Until four, "lālana", fondling and indulgence, and protection; after that, the commentary says, from four onward, training in "guṇas", good qualities and skills, and in learning, until the age of sixteen.
