Meaning
The company is a garland (mālita) of the great names of the Vedic tradition: Bhṛgu and Aṅgiras, founders of lineages; Pulastya; Cyavana, Uddālaka (the teacher of the Chāndogya Upaniṣad's "you are that"), Uśīra and Śaraloman. To a hearer of the old texts each name calls up stories. The reader need not know them all to feel the weight of the list: the whole wisdom of the past is gathering to hear one young man's question answered.
