Meaning
The rites of hospitality: arghya, water offered for the hands, and pādya, water for washing the feet, and then kind words (vacas). These are the traditional welcomes for an honoured guest. The two great sages of the hall receive the sages of the sky in this way, one by one (kramāt). The reader may notice that the grandest company is greeted with the simplest gifts: water and a word.
