Meaning

The Vairāgya Prakaraṇa ends with a promise in the drutavilambita metre. The sages bind themselves: if Rāma's wish, which is for knowledge of the truth, is not fulfilled by them, then they are the ones without understanding (hata-buddhi). The commentary: if the longing of Śrī Rāma's mind for knowledge of the truth is not fulfilled by the teaching of knowers like us, our learning is in vain. It is the right ending. A sincere question puts the teacher, not only the student, to the test. With this the first prakaraṇa closes, and the next, the Mumukṣu-vyavahāra Prakaraṇa, on the conduct of the seeker, begins the answer. The reader who has followed Rāma's dispassion through these thirty-three sargas stands where he stands: having asked, and waiting to hear.
