Meaning

The future of this Vyāsa. He will be born eight more times (vārāṣṭaka), and will again compose the Bhārata, the great epic, with its histories (setihāsa). The commentary: this same Vyāsa will be born eight more times and again write the Bhārata. The Mahābhārata, which seems a single work with a single author, is in this view composed again and again, as the Vedas are divided again and again: the eternal returns in time.
