Meaning
"Otherwise" means without the means given here. The "pits of the scriptures" are teachings that deal with what is not the Self: rites for gains in this world and the next, which those blind with beginningless ignorance follow and stumble in, born again and again to enjoy their fruits. The ignorance is "inborn" (akṛtrima, not made): it has no beginning, and only knowledge ends it. A thousand other practices, says the commentary, cannot bring the peace of liberation, even over countless ages of creation.
