शस्त्रास्त्रैर्बहुधा मुक्तैरादीपितदिगन्तरम्। महिषासुरसेनानीश्चिक्षुराख्यो महासुरः ॥ ४० ॥
śastrāstrairbahudhā muktairādīpitadigantaram | mahiṣāsurasēnānīścikṣurākhyō mahāsuraḥ || 40 ||
Translation
'The horizons were lit up by the many weapons and missiles released in all directions. The great demon named Chikshur, the general of Mahishasura's army, ...'

Meaning
The battle erupts with immense fury. The sheer number of projectiles (śastrāstraiḥ) flying across the battlefield illuminates the sky. The narrator introduces the first of Mahishasura's generals: Chikshur, a mighty commander.
