Verse 1
‘ॐ’ ऋषिरुवाच॥ १ ॥ निशुम्भं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरं प्राणसम्मितम्। हन्यमानं बलं चैव शुम्भः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीद्वचः॥ २ ॥
‘oṁ’ ṛṣiruvāca || 1 || niśumbhaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā bhrātaraṁ prāṇasammitam | hanyamānaṁ balaṁ caiva śumbhaḥ kruddho’bravīdvacaḥ || 2 ||
Translation
Om. The sage said: Having seen his brother Nishumbha, equal to his life, slain, and his army being destroyed, Shumbha, enraged, spoke these words:

Meaning
The chapter begins with the sage continuing the narrative, addressing the king (Suratha) about the events following Nishumbha’s defeat. Shumbha, witnessing the death of his beloved brother Nishumbha and the destruction of his army, becomes furious and addresses the Goddess, initiating the final confrontation.
