Meaning

Cattle are tied by a long rope with many nooses, one for each neck. Craving is that rope for all beings caught up in worldly business: their minds are strung on it (pariprota-manomālā) like beads. The commentary: as a long rope binds many beasts by the neck, craving binds the minds of all creatures on every side. The verse widens the view: it is not one person's problem but the bond of the whole world. The reader is on the same rope as everyone else, and freedom from it is freedom from what binds all.
