Meaning

Here Rāma names craving the chief of all faults: it alone gives sorrow that lasts (dīrgha-duḥkha). It can reach even one who lives in the antaḥpura, the safest inner rooms of a palace, and throw him into the greatest danger. Rāma is a prince, and speaks of what he knows: walls and guards protect against every enemy but this one. The reader may consider how much of their own security is a palace that craving walks through freely.
