Meaning
The first day of the teaching ends, in the vasantatilakā metre, with a refrain: every line ends in "went" (jagāma). The day went; the sun (ina) went to its setting, so that the evening rites could be done; the assembly bowed and went to bathe; and at the end of night (śyāmā-kṣaya) it came back with the sun's rays. A note in the text marks this as "the first day". The teaching of the Yoga Vāsiṣṭha unfolds over days, interrupted by the ordinary rhythm of rites, bathing and sleep. The reader may take the hint: the highest teaching is not received in one sitting. It is heard, slept on, and heard again.
