Meaning
A cry of reproach. The fools (mūḍha) who do not turn their minds by their own effort to reflect on the truth as scripture teaches, and so gain nothing, are condemned: "shame on their wretched desire" (dhik durīpsitam). The commentary quotes the Upaniṣad: "if one knows it here, there is truth; if one does not know it here, great is the loss." To be born human and not use the birth to know oneself is the greatest waste. The reproach is sharp because the opportunity is so great.
