Meaning
The verse states the renunciant's logic. Desire for a partner is the root of the wish for the enjoyments of the world; without it, the commentary says, where is the occasion? So to give it up is to give up the world, and to give up the world is happiness. This is spoken by a man to men in the language of his time; its principle, that the strongest attachment holds all the others, applies to every seeker. The Yoga Vāsiṣṭha will later show that the true giving up is inward, and can be done in the midst of family and kingdom.
