Meaning

Youth gives the mind room to play, and the mind plays without limit (ananta-vilāsa). The young man feels every movement of it, attraction, aversion, longing, jealousy, and, as the commentary says, passes from one grief to the next, a chain of sorrows. He is jaḍa, "dull", not because he lacks intelligence but because he does not see the pattern. The reader may look back on youth and recognise how each passion that seemed new led into the next.
