Meaning
The khadira, a hard thorny acacia, grows thickly on rocky hills; one does not plant it, it simply springs from the mountain. Sorrows are like that. The ones that last long (dīrgha), the harsh ones (viṣama), the great ones (mahat), are not planted by circumstance; they grow out of the ego as from their own soil. Small pains may come from outside, but the sorrows that endure are those in which "I" and "mine" are wound up. The reader may test it: of one's lasting griefs, how many are griefs about oneself?
