Om. Seated on the lion, the moon on her crest, with four arms bright as emerald holding the conch, the discus, the bow and the arrows, beautiful with her three eyes; adorned with armlets, necklaces and bracelets, with a jingling girdle and ringing anklets, her earrings gleaming with gems: may Durgā, who takes away misfortune, be ours.

Meaning
Before the Vedic hymn comes a meditation on Durgā in her four-armed form, green-gold as an emerald and seated on the lion. Her name is read in its root sense: Durgā is the one who carries the devotee across durgati, every hard and evil pass.
