Meaning

This third core verse of Saptashloki Durga is a profound salutation to Goddess Durga, addressing her with multiple epithets that highlight her divine qualities. As sarva-maṅgala-maṅgalyē, she is the source of all auspiciousness; as śivē, she is benevolent; as sarvārtha-sādhikē, she fulfills all desires. She is śaraṇyē, the ultimate refuge for devotees, tryambakē, the three-eyed one symbolizing omniscience and connection to Shiva, gauri, the radiant fair one, and nārāyaṇi, the consort or power of Nārāyaṇa (Vishnu). The verse concludes with a humble offering of salutations (namōstu tē). In the Shakta tradition, particularly within the Durga Saptashati, this verse encapsulates Durga’s multifaceted nature as the supreme śakti who protects, blesses, and liberates her devotees in the Kali Yuga. Its widespread use in worship underscores its universal appeal and spiritual potency.
